今天我们看三个写作句型：
一、如何对某物进行评价？
《经济学人》中曾有篇文章讲到了冬奥会中的冰上项目，在评价花滑评分标准时，作者是这么说的：
The system has certainly worked as designed, making judging fairer and more consistent, but it has also generated numerous unintended consequences.
这一制度的确如预期般发挥了作用，使判定更加公正、一致，但也带来许多意想不到的后果。
这句话很简单，前半句肯定了这一制度的积极一面：The system has certainly worked as designed.
design一词可以注意一下，我们都知道它是“设计”的意思，其实在外刊和各类考试中，它常表示一种目的、计划，比如：
Our transportation system is designed to answer the needs of the city's commuters.
我们的交通系统旨在满足每天进城上班者的需求。
be designed to不是“被设计为...”，而是“旨在、计划是...”。
所以文中 work as designed 就可以理解成：像计划中的那样发挥了作用。
后面状语结构“making judging fairer and more consistent”是对worked as designed的展开和补充。
最后半句作者进行转折，点出了这一制度带来的问题：but it has also generated numerous unintended consequences.
这里可以get√到一个many的高级替换：numerous 大量的。
unintended=un+intend+ed，表示“无意的、意外的”，比如：
the unintended consequences of human action
人的行为无意中造成的后果
unintended pregnancies
意外怀孕
我们可以从这句话中提炼出一个写作句型，可用于对某事进行评价：

二、如何表达递进的逻辑关系？
2020年10月10日的《经济学人》封面文章讲到了蚂蚁金服对金融行业的影响，文中有这么一段话：
..., and its payments network carried $16trn of transactions last year, connecting 80m merchants. Payments are just the appetiser. Users can borrow money, choose from 6,000 investment products, and buy health insurance.
它（蚂蚁金服）的支付网络去年的交易额达16万亿美元，覆盖8000万商户。支付业务只是它的开胃菜。其用户还可申请贷款、投资理财（有6000种投资产品供选择）和购买医疗保险。
这段话讲了蚂蚁金服的两类业务：支付业务(payments)以及贷款(borrow money)、投资(investment products)、医疗保险(health insurance)等业务，中间通过“XX are just the appetiser”过渡、衔接。
carry基本含义是“携带、带有”的意思，文中carried $16trn of transactions就可以理解成“带有16万亿美元的交易额”的意思，说得通顺点就是“交易额达16万亿美元”。
建议大家直接把这个结构背下来：业务+carry+$ of transactions.
appetiser源自appetite (胃口) 这个词，表示 使人有胃口者→开胃菜：
图片所以文中“Payments are just the appetiser”的意思是：支付业务只是一道开胃菜。言外之意就是，后面还有更精彩/更重要的东西，表达出了递进的逻辑关系。
写作中，当我们表示递进的逻辑关系时，往往会拘泥于 What's more、Moreover 等常规结构，下次我们可以尝试用 XX be the appetiser 来替换，更加形象有趣。
此外，我们在罗列要点的时候，也可以加上这句话：
First, ...
XX is just the appetiser. Second, ...
给平淡无奇的表达加点色彩。
下面我们可以结合个人生活或时事热点造个句子，比如关于“智能家居”：
Smart-home technology can help turn on your air-conditioner and bulbs 15 minutes before you come back. But that is just the appetiser. Smart speakers allow you to play music easily, and they can also do simple tasks like creating a shopping list, calling a ride-share car, reminding you of an appointment or reading your children a bedtime story.

三、如何评价别人的观点？
《经济学人》中曾有篇文章分析了线上教育的利与弊，文中有这么一段话：
Concerns over high drop-out rates are overblown. Most people (including your correspondent) enroll for these free courses for enjoyment, enlightenment or curiosity and are not committed to finishing them or gaining a certificate.
人们对（线上教育）高辍学率的担忧被夸大了。大多数人(包括本报记者)报名参加这些免费课程，是因为乐趣、启迪或好奇心，而不是为了上完课程或获得证书。
这段话的意思是，很多人上网课都坚持不到最后，因此线上教育的辍学率很高(high drop-out rates)。但这不是问题，因为很多人上网课并不是为了读完课程或者获取一个证书，而是为了乐趣或启迪，所以不必担心。
讲三个表达：
overblown如果我们不认识的话，可以根据前缀“over-”推断出来，“over-”作为前缀，跟“过度、过分”有关，比如 overexcited 过度兴奋的。文中overblown就是“过分的、夸张的”意思，相当于exaggerated，所以Concerns over high drop-out rates are overblown的意思就是：人们对高辍学率的担忧太夸张了。言外之意是，没必要对高辍学率感到担忧。
drop-out rates指“辍学率”，其动词 drop out 指“辍学”，如果中间加一个连字符，变成drop-out，则表示名词“辍学者”，可数(drop-outs)。
第三个表达是 enroll for+课程，表示“报名XX课程、修读XX课程”，比如现在大学生都要在网上选课，这个动作就是 enroll for XX courses.
文中enroll for these free courses for...的意思是：因为...而报名这些免费课程。
